May Pyramid (Pirámide de Mayo). This is the exact place where "Madres de Plaza de Mayo" march since 1977, asking for information regarding the fate of their missing family ("desaparecidos"). Around the pyramid, on the floor, there are paintings representing these marches. It was the first monument of the city, erected in 1811 to commemorate the first anniversary of the May Revolution. The original structure, a 46 ft. (14 meters) Roman style hollow adobe baked obelisk, was designed by Francisco Cañete. In 1856, a local artist, Prilidiano Pueyrredón, cover the original pyramid with a new one, increasing its height to 60 ft.(18 meters) and ornamenting its apex with the fighting version of Palas Atenea Minerva) (By J. Dubourdie) representing Victory, Republic and Freedom. A copy of this monument can be seen in Sarmiento's Museum, in Belgrano neighborhood.
